Stop Federal Energy Tax

Update (Jun 26, 2009): To support the Waxman-Markey energy bill that is being pushed towards a vote in Congress today is to support one’s own economic destruction. This fake “American Clean Energy and Security Act” (HR.2454) has in recent days been opposed by both Greenpeace [1] and the U.N. [2] – two primary advocates of the need to address “global warming” who are opposing this bad legislation as it would not make any noticeable impact on the climate, while simultaneosly creating huge economic devastation. Even the Wall Street Journal has run an article today summarising these facts with the following comments:

The inconvenient truth is that the earth’s temperatures have flat-lined since 2001, despite growing concentrations of C02. Peer-reviewed research has debunked doomsday scenarios about the polar ice caps, hurricanes, malaria, extinctions, rising oceans. A global financial crisis has politicians taking a harder look at the science that would require them to hamstring their economies to rein in carbon. [3]

A number of estimates have been made in terms of the real impact of this bill on the average family in the USA, with figures from $3,000 to as high as $10,000 per year being calculated by different reports. This is hidden tax and there is no other honest way to describe it. Using an average estimate of a minimum $4,600 per year increase (which has been the conclusion in a number of studies) we are talking about almost $100 per week in additional energy costs over the next two to three decades for the average family, at a time when the global economic collapse is already affecting almost every one of us (excepting, of course, the extremely wealthy people, who happen to be the main force driving this terrible legislation forwards).

In addition to the increase in energy costs for citizens and businesses, it is estimated that 1.1 million jobs in the USA will be lost by 2012, with at least 2.5 million job losses by 2035 [4]. To pass this bill would be intentional economic destruction on a vast scale, for the benefit of having a negligible impact on the environment, with all of the measures in the bill only reducing any possible warming by a few hundredths of a degree by the year 2050 [5]. When interviewed about his planned energy bill by the San Francisco Chronicle on January 17, 2008, Obama himself said: “… under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket” [6]. Yet, this is coming from the man who made a “firm pledge” to not increase any taxes whatsoever for any family earning less that $250,000 per year (see original post below for details).

Take Action [USA residents]

On Friday, June 26, your Representatives will vote to raise your utility bill by at least $4,600 per year!

The “Waxman-Markey Clean Energy Bill” will limit American energy production, decrease American jobs, and increase the cost that you and your family pay every time you fill up your vehicle. Don’t let them pass this bill!

While liberals claim they want to “help the environment” and help consumers cope with rising energy costs, the Waxman-Markey energy bill will only increase taxes.

This bill includes a provision to create a “cap-and-trade” program – a tax on all factories and every American who turns on a light – which would result in an extra $4,600 annual tax on every American family and the loss of nearly 800,000 jobs per year.

“During the American Revolution, there was the cry that taxation without representation was tyranny. This should now be a global outcry. Governments everywhere are taxing people, and they are not rightly representing the interests of the people.” —Adi Da, Not-Two Is Peace

Jun 6, 2009: A new bill being moved towards a vote in the House of Congress [1] contains massive hidden taxes that will significantly affect the economic livelihood of all Americans. It is wrongly named the “American Clean Energy And Security Act of 2009” as it will not, in reality, do anything to protect the environment or provide any economic security to the consumer. The actual result of this bill will be a “scientifically meaningless” reduction in possible warming due to CO2 [2] combined with a total increase in taxes of between $650 billion and $2 trillion over the next decade – paid by us, the people, to the federal government and their big business associates.

This is being fully supported by Obama, who stated on September 12, 2008 during a campaign speech in Dover, New Hampshire:

“I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”[3]

However, by one estimate the direct outcome of this bill would be this:

“The average American family would pay, directly or indirectly, approximately $10,000 per year in new energy taxes.” [4]

“Global Warming” or “Global Cooling”?
– A number of links (that will be updated periodically) to information and articles about climate change. The brief introduction on this page makes the point that there are many other environmental issues that need more urgent attention than possible “global warming” and a list of some of these key issues is provided. Discussion about possible “global cooling” has become more common over the past year, due to obvious lower temperatures globally (2008-09 was the coldest winter for many years in much of the northern hemisphere), huge increases in ice mass that are happening in many places, the much quieter sun (with very few sunspots over the past two years) than seen since about 80-90 years ago (when it was noticeably cooler globally) and so on.
